The family of Umlazi man who is accused of killing his mother says they wouldn’t want him to get bail. Sibusiso Radebe appeared briefly in court in Umlazi on Wednesday where the case was postposed to 19 March. He allegedly slit his mother’s throat.

“If the community were to kill him, the police won’t leave him on the streets. They’d call the vry same family that’s feeling pain. Yes, he is our brother, but we see him as an animal now because of what he did,” said the Delani Radebe, the brother of the accused.

He said his brother has always had a history of violence. “None of his brothers does not have a scar from being assaulted by him.”

Various women’s rights organisations picketed outside court on the day. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mbali Shinga said the provincial government has developed gender based violence campaigns in all its departments. “We mostly focused on young girls. We now have initiatives to teach young boys that abuse must never occur,” explained Shinga.

His family said the accused has had many altercations with community members. “My mother would protect him because he was also her child.”
