Lecturers have been disrupted at the Durban university of Technology (DUT) amid reports that some students who receive support from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) have not received their allowances.

As a result, members of the Economic Freedom Fighters Students Command (EFF SC) who had covered their faces stormed lecture venues and forced students to leave campuses on Tuesday, 06 May 2025. “No Payment, No Classes. We make up and sleep again,” they chanted.

They further said that they would be returning to all the venues to ensure that no further teaching and learning was still taking place. “We have tried dialogue, petitions, and official complaints, but nothing has changed. We are tired of excuses. This money is not a favor; it’s our right,” said one EFFSC representative.

Some students feel that the disruptions are necessary even though they’re an impediment to their studies

“The strike is the only way the university will listen to students,” said Fine Arts student, Ludwe Sithole.

“The strike is necessary and we applaud the SRC for standing up for the rights and needs of students. They are risking their own education,” said hospitality student, Thobani Jwara.

DUT released a statement that said the delay is due to administration failures and lack of communication by NSFAS.
