“What I can say is that the SRC elections were rigged by a staff member who is working at Student Development.” Those were the sentiments of Snakhokonke Masondo, convernor of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL), which is in alliance with SASCO.

Masondo made these allegations after the Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command (EFFYC) won the 2025 Student Representative Council (SRC) elections for the 8th term in a row at the Durban University of Technology, Durban Campus.

The elections took place from the 16th and closed on the 19th of September 2025 at 8 am in the morning as party members were seen helping students in all the DUT campuses in Durban.

As the SRC elections are done online, there has always been an issue of results being allegedly tampered with, which influences the outcome of the elections and so forth.

Speaking to Credible Source, Masondo said the stats of the voters’ roll or the students who voted this year for SRC elections were not more than 9 thousand.

“When the results came in, it shows that more than 10 thousand students voted for each and every candidate that eas on the ballot. This means it’s either the stats which are incorrect or it is the final results, but with our presentation of students who voted for SASCO, we know very well that there’s more that 2 thousand students that voted for SASCO,” said Masondo.

“We know for a fact that for the past 3 years, the SRC elections were rigged because we know from members of the EFFYC and some members of Student Development staff, they told us that results have been tampered with and we will never win SRC elections,” he said.

Masondo said that for now, they are still waiting for their convocants, both ANCYL, SASCO, and Welfare Convocants, to advise them on how to carry on with this matter, but as the leadership of the branch, they won’t stop advocating for DUT students.

Meanwhile, EFFYC Chairperson, at DUT Durban branch, Wise Ndlovu, said the students have entrusted them by giving them authority position to make sure that in everything that students needs are assisted accordingly.

“We are happy that students are still having hope to the EFFYC. Our plan is to make sure that students get funding and all the money that the institution owes students, they need to pay it back,” said Ndlovu.

He said there’s plenty of things they want to do for the students, but issues of funding and accommodation are a top priority.
