Hundreds of protestors marched outside the Homii Properties building in Durban CBD on Monday demanding justice and calling for someone to be held accountable.
The protest comes after the two Dlamini twins, Aphelele and Aphile fell down a lift shaft during repairs at their block of flats a week ago. In that ordeal, A twin boy died on the scene while the girl is still at the Addington Hospital fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Addressing the crowd, Khaya Dlamini, the father of the twins said he will not give up until he gets answers from the Homii management.
“I will keep telling the world until I find my justice. Homii management does not care. No one has visited me and my wife. I had to go to the to the security office to demand footage, and they refused to give it to me. They only gave me grocery bag and teddy bear, which I refused,” he said.
According to reports from social media, this is not the first time an incident of this nature occurs, and some people took it to social media to share their stories.
Ntomb’k said: “That flat is dangerous. My friend’s daughter died in 2023 allegedly in the same lift from 7th floor and the body was found kwi 4th floor. Sorry bro.”
Fuavemglobal wrote, “Its probably for the 5th time manje” while thenunubery wrote: “My res mate died 3 years ago after she fell into the lift shaft at homi.”
Mesuli Mkhwanazi further wrote and said: “I remember days after my best friend’s incident; there was still blood around the area where they had taken her out. They literally just surrounded it with tape, but they DID NOT CLOSR THE DOORS. People/tenants were still going in and out to throw their garbage out (if you live in that building or have been inside, you’ll know what I’m talking about – 2nd floor). No precautions were taken to prevent another accident. I even went to clean the blood off myself because they just neglected the whole thing like nothing ever happened.”
Dlamini’s demand for justice gathered widespread public support on social media and various political parties joined in, including the March in March movement.
