The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Sboniso Duma is putting his foot down when it comes to drinking and driving in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

This comes after 26 motorists were arrested in uMhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, and went on to make their appearance in the Durban Central Magistrate Court.

Among motorists that were arrested were, one Durban Metro Police Officer , one South African Police Service (SAPS) member in Estcourt who had just recently been arrested. His first arrest was on the 31st of October and the second arrest after getting bail on the 1st of November 2025. The others include two nurses, two teachers and two minibus taxi drivers.

Through the  No Nonsense, Alufakwa, Zero Tolerance campaign, the MEC aims to deal with drinking and driving firmly and decisively. He said these operations should be viewed within the context of a build up to the festive season and beyond.

“We want motorists and the public at large to change their behavior and understand that road safety is a collective responsibility. Statistics have indicated that up to 87 percent of all road fatalities in the country can be attributed to road user behavior. This has compelled us to rollout operations focusing on behavioral change across all corners of the province,” Duma said.

Since the 15th of August, the Road Traffic Inspectorate unit in the province has arrested 1 117 motorists. This past weekend alone, 215 motorists were arrested.

The breakdown of figures is as follows:

    Empangeni – 84

    Estcourt – 60

    Pietermaritzburg – 45

    Umhlanga Rocks – 26
