Many supporters feel Bafana Bafana needs some improvement, should they qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as none of the South African players scored goals against Nigeria, with the Bafana Bafana goal being courtesy of an own goal by the Super Eagles.
The two played to a 1-1 draw in Bloemfontein last night, which edges group-leading South Africa closer to their first World Cup qualification in over 20 years while further diminishing Nigeria’s chances of even participating in second-place play-offs.
Speaking to Credible Source, the fans said the team played well, but they were not happy about how Bafana managed the game and some of the substitutions the coach made.
“There are chances that we can go to the World Cup. We played well, and we showed strength. Although when we reach the World Cup, we won’t go that far. There are areas where we’re still lacking in terms of managing the game in order to gain confidence,” said Bayanda Mkhonza.
He said the strikers need to be sharp, although it was a tough match, but they did very well.
Nkanyiso Ndlovu said that although he watched the second half of the match, the boys did well. He lamented the subs made by the coaches and felt certain players should have been given a chance.
“Our front three, especially Nkota and Appolis, should have at least been subbed in the 75th minute to bring on Mofokeng and Sebelebele. Overall, the TLB (Mbekezeli Mbokazi), Monyane, and others played well.”
The Super Eagles of Nigeria came out guns blazing, but it was Bafana who drew first blood when Mohau Nkota’s cross led to an own goal by Nigeria’s captain William Troost-Ekong in the 25th minute. They later leveled matters in the 44th minute through Calvin Bassey.
The second half began with both sides showing signs that they wanted all three points, as neither side gave in.
The youngster, Mbekezeli Mbokazi was named the man of the match after he made crucial blocks in the match.
Coach Hugo Broos praised the fighting spirit of his players.
“We wanted the win, but I’m happy with a draw,” said the Belgian tactician.
The draw in group C meant Bafana are now on 17 points maintaining their top spot while Nigeria on 11 points.
Bafana will return to action next month where they will face Zimbabwe before ending the qualifiers against Rwanda.
