Craving something sweet but not in the mood to bake? The Peppermint Crisp Tart, also known as mud pie, is a South African favourite — rich, creamy, and ridiculously easy to make. It’s perfect for a braai, Sunday lunch, or just a midweek pick-me-up after classes.
Best of all, it’s budget-friendly and uses only a few simple ingredients you can find at any supermarket.
Ingredients
- 250 ml whipped cream
- 1 tin (360g) of caramel treat
- 1 packet of Tennis biscuits
- 1 Peppermint Crisp bar or any mint chocolate

Method
- Start by grating or chopping the Peppermint Crisp chocolate into small pieces. Set it aside for later.
- In a clean bowl, whisk the cream until soft peaks form, be careful not to overwhisk.
- In a separate bowl, stir the caramel treat with a fork until smooth.
- Gently fold half of the caramel and some of the chopped chocolate into the whipped cream.
- Line the bottom of a square or rectangular dish with a layer of Tennis biscuits.
- Spread the cream and caramel mixture over the biscuits, making sure to cover the edges evenly.
- Repeat the layers until all your ingredients are used up.
- Finish off by sprinkling the remaining chopped chocolate on top.
- Place the tart in the fridge to set, ideally overnight, but at least for three to four hours if you’re short on time.
Serve chilled with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate treat.
