For many, Eid is a time of togetherness – a day filled with family gatherings, shared meals,
    and celebration.

For far too many children, especially those without families, the day can be lonely. In Durban, a youth-led organisation is working to change that reality.

Youth 4 Humanity recently hosted their annual “Eid Fun Day,” bringing together orphans and underprivileged children from various madressahs for a morning dedicated to joy, inclusion, and care. The initiative aimed to ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, could experience the warmth and happiness during Eid. The director of Youth 4 Humanity Zayd said, “Eid day is a special time for us Muslims and we found out
that there is a very big need for people to get involved in helping people who are underprivileged so as Youth 4 Humanity we are just trying to give back.”

From the moment the event began, the atmosphere was transformed into one of excitement and celebration. Bright decorations, cheerful music, and the sound of laughter filled the space as children moved eagerly between activities. Jumping castles, games, and entertainment created an environment where children could simply be children carefree and happy.

Abdur Rahman Kharsany a volunteer said “We look at ourselves and ask what we have that we can give. If we can make a child smile, if we can make a child happy that is what matters.”

At the heart of the day was a deeper purpose. To restore a sense of belonging. For many children, opportunities like this are rare. The simple act of being included in a celebration, of sharing meals and laughter with others, carried significance that went beyond the surface.

Meals, drinks, and treats were provided to all attendees, reflecting the spirit of giving that lies at the core of Eid. The organisers ensured that every detail of the day contributed to making the children feel valued and remembered. Naseema a core team volunteer explained “We grow up in families that have everything so it’s very important to give to the under privileged so that we understand the importances of Eid so that they can experience what we as experience, so they feel what we feel for Eid as well.”

Youth 4 Humanity, made up of passionate young volunteers, has built its mission around serving vulnerable communities. Their work extends far beyond special occasions, with regular outreach efforts that include food distribution to orphanages, old age homes, and homeless individuals across the region. However, events like the Eid Fun Day highlight the emotional and social impact of their work. While food and basic needs are essential, moments of joy, connection, and celebration are equally important in restoring dignity and hope. Mohammed Kharsany, a volunteer said, “Eid is a day of celebration and joy, and we are not celebrating if only a part of us is celebrating we need to share that joy with everyone around us especially with those
    underprivileged.”

The event also brought together volunteers and members of the wider community, demonstrating the power of collective action. Through donations and support, the organisation continues to expand its reach and provide meaningful experiences for those in need.

As the day came to an end, the laughter slowly faded, but the impact remained. For a few hours, the children were not defined by their circumstances, but by their smiles, their excitement, and their shared experience of celebration.

In that space, they were not alone. They were part of something bigger, which was a community that chose to show up for them. And in doing so, Youth 4 Humanity reminded everyone that the true meaning of Eid lies not
only in celebration, but in compassion, generosity, and the simple act of making others feel
