The KwaZulu-Natal government says law enforcement will be tough on law-breaking drivers this Easter weekend.

This was the stance shared by KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, as he visited Durban Station Taxi Rank to assess the readiness and roadworthiness of minibus taxis.

“We have zero tolerance, every vehicle on the road must meet the required safety standards to protect the lives of passengers,” said Duma.

The visit forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to ensure commuter safety as thousands of travellers are expected to use long-distance transport during the holiday season.

Duma conducted inspections and engaged with taxi operators to confirm that vehicles are in good condition and that there’s compliant with safety regulations.

He emphasised the importance of responsible driving and strict adherence to traffic laws, warning that authorities will take action against non-compliant operators.

“There will be zero tolerance for reckless driving, overloading, or unroadworthy vehicles. Law enforcement officers will be deployed across major routes to ensure full compliance,” he added.

Durban Long-Distance Taxi Association (DLDTA) spokesperson, Mcabangeni Nala said they’re ready to assist where they can.

“After the MEC checked our taxis, he confirmed that our taxis are ready for transporting our passengers”, said Nala.

    Taxi operators welcomed Nala’s visit.

“We will ensure the safety of our passengers and we are committed to avoiding the rules in the road,” said one taxi driver at the rank.
