The Durban Magistrate’s Court has granted Sphelele “Magolide” Shinga, who was arrested in connection with the recent violent protests in Durban, bail of R1 000.
Shinga, an occupational nurse by profession, appeared in court on Monday, 12 October, alongside his co-accused, Wandile Nsibande, 37, and Malizo Dzanibe, 31, following their arrests last week.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the three accused face charges including incitement to commit public violence, public violence, acting in a riotous or physically threatening manner, contravening the Regulation of Gatherings Act read with the Dangerous Weapons Act, possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS), contravening the SAPS Act, and hindering or obstructing traffic.
During their court appearance, the State opposed bail for the accused. However, Shinga and Dzanibe were each granted bail of R1 000.
Their bail conditions include refraining from participating in violent protests, intimidating or threatening foreign nationals, and participating in any forced shutdown of businesses.
Nsibande’s bail application was postponed to 16 October 2026 for further bail investigations.
“The matter was postponed to 16 October 2026 for bail investigations in respect of Nsibande. The State remains opposed to bail,” said NPA spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.
