Few musicians in the ever-evolving music industry can win people over at such an early stage of their careers. Yet one newcomer, Nontokozo Mkhize, has not only left her mark but has also won some prestigious accolades, solidifying her status as an upcoming superstar in the industry.

The gifted singer’s creativity was sown early, with church providing a strong connection to something bigger and a grounding in music.

”My journey in music began at church. Growing up, I was inspired by

gospel music and the way it brought people closer to God. From singing at

church and at school, my dream to pursue a career in music only grew

    Stronger,” she remembers.’

She attributes her musical choice to her role model and seasoned musician, Brenda Mtambo.

”My favourite artist is Brenda Mtambo. She’s one artist who influenced my versatility. How she fits in gospel, traditional music, soul music and jazz! I love that! I just want to be like her.”

Mkhize says that her musical journey has been fulfilling and there have also been many surprises, like winning this year’s Best Newcomer Award at Basadi Music Awards after previously winning the Best Newcomer Award at the Metro FM Music Awards.

”The fact that I’m receiving a second award for Best Newcomer this year is crazy for me. It’s confirmation that, indeed, I’m the best newcomer, and it also says to me I am doing something right. I’m very grateful to God and everyone who’s been supporting my journey,” she said.

Mkhize, despite her success, maintains humility and acknowledges her early dreams and accomplishments. Initially, she underestimated her chances of winning because of the popularity of other nominees.

She acknowledges the significance of the Basadi Music Awards, particularly as a female musician. She says: “’This platform represents a powerful acknowledgement of the invaluable contributions, talents and dedication of women in music. I’m proud to be among the talented women and being recognised means everything to me as a young woman who just started her journey in this industry.”

She acknowledges storytelling as the core of her music, describing each song as a narrative reflecting her experiences and providing a window into her world.

”I love storytelling. Whenever I write, I want to make sure that whoever is listening gets the story. I write about anything that happens in my life around me, everything,” she shared.

Mkhize underlines that the path to success will not be without challenges. She highlighted that the shifting from a gigging backing vocalist to a solo artist has been a difficult shift.

She said getting booked was the biggest challenge for her transition from backing vocalist to solo artist, but she acknowledged the importance of adapting and not relying solely on one thing.

About her future plans, she plans to study jazz to expand her style and ensure her music evolves over time. ”I have had to work to make some songs not sound too churchy, because the church is my influence,” she said.

As her career progresses, she plans to use her influence to motivate and

encourage others. ”As I continue to grow, I hope to use my platform and voice to uplift, inspire and empower others. I want my music to be a beacon of hope, love and light in the world. I believe that is what we need,” Mkhize.

Mkhize advises upcoming artists to use the power of social media and share their work, as they never know who might be watching.
