The new-generation Volkswagen (VW) T-Roc has arrived in Durban, with the second-generation compact SUV unveiled at a ceremony held at Hoopers Volkswagen.
The new T-Roc is larger than its predecessor and comes with a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and a lower starting price.
VW has dropped the 2.0 TSI engine from the South African line-up, with all three derivatives of the new T-Roc powered by the 1.4 TSI engine. The engine produces 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque and sends power to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
One of the biggest changes is the price. The previous-generation T-Roc baseline was R648,900, while the new entry-level T-Roc 1.4 TSI Life is priced at R599,900 — a reduction of almost R50,000. The new range extends to R709,900 for the R-Line Black Style.
VW claims fuel consumption of 6.6 litres per 100 km. The vehicle has a 50-litre fuel tank, giving it a claimed range of about 758 km under the stated consumption figure.
The second-generation T-Roc is positioned between the Taigo and Tiguan in Volkswagen’s South African SUV line-up. It has grown by 122 mm in length compared with the outgoing model, while its wheelbase has increased by 28 mm, creating additional interior space.
The new model also features a 475-litre luggage compartment, making it more practical for everyday use and longer trips.
Higher-specification versions of the T-Roc offer additional technology and comfort features, including advanced infotainment, IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlights and driver-assistance systems. A head-up display and other optional features are also available depending on the derivative and specification.
The T-Roc is covered by Volkswagen’s five-year/90,000 km EasyDrive Service Plan. Volkswagen South Africa lists a three-year/120,000 km warranty as standard, although some dealer launch packages may offer extended warranty cover.
The new T-Roc’s combination of a larger body, additional technology and a lower entry price gives Volkswagen a strong offering in the compact SUV market.
For a vehicle market where new generations often come with higher price tags, the T-Roc stands out by offering more space and updated technology while reducing its entry price.
