President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deadline for the final report of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System.
The commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, was established after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive media briefing on 6 July 2025. During the briefing, Mkhwanazi alleged political interference, corruption and the infiltration of organised crime within elements of South Africa’s criminal justice system, prompting Ramaphosa to establish the commission of inquiry.
The commission will now submit its final report on Monday, 16 November 2026, instead of the original deadline of 31 August 2026.
The Presidency said the extension sets an evidence deadline of Friday, 2 October 2026, and a reporting deadline of Monday, 16 November 2026, allowing the commission to conclude evidence on matters that emerged during its hearings.
“The extension allows the Commission to hear evidence on all of the matters listed in its terms of reference. Without an extension, the Commission will have to leave large parts of its work unfinished,” Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said.
Magwenya said Ramaphosa had expressed his appreciation for the commission’s work and for the manner in which law enforcement agencies have acted on testimony emerging from the hearings.
The extension comes as authorities continue to act on evidence presented before the commission.
Former Ekurhuleni city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi and suspended Human Resources head Linda Gxasheka are expected to apply for bail on Friday after appearing in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.
The pair appeared alongside embattled former Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and the municipality’s Head of Legal Services, Kemi Behari following their arrest by the South African Police Service’s Madlanga Commission Recommendations Task Team. The four face charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice. Behari and Mkhwanazi were granted R50 000 bail each on Thursday.
