Beneficiaries who have completed the new enrolment of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have heaped praise of the system’s efficiency.
The nationwide biometric system which officially launched last month uses fingerprint and facial recognition to verify the identity of grant recipients. It replaces manual ID checks and paper-based verification, which were vulnerable to impersonation, duplication, and administrative delays.
Early feedback from beneficiaries and staff suggests the system is delivering on its promise: faster service, fewer errors, and stronger protection against fraud.
Some of the beneficiaries said the system brought a sense of security and dignity. One of them is Thulani Dube (67) from uMlazi.
“I was nervous at first, but it took less than five minutes. No more standing in long queues every month. I feel safer knowing no one can pretend to be me,” said Dube.
Nokuthula Mthembu, who is receiving a child support grant for her three children shared the same sentiments as Dube.
“I used to worry about someone using my ID. Now, with my fingerprints linked, I know my children’ money is protected,” she concluded.
SASSA Officer in KwaMashu, Zanele Mkhize, said the enrolment process is designed to be quick and user-friendly.
“We are seeing the benefits already. The system is intuitive. It guides us through each step, and most clients are enrolled in under ten minutes. It has made our work more efficient and accurate.” Mkhize said.
She added that the rollout has been technically smooth, with no major disruptions reported.
“We haven’t experienced any technical issues so far, even during load shedding, we have backup power and mobile units to ensure enrolment continues without delay.” She concluded.
While the initial rollout focused on new applicants and those updating personal details, SASSA will begin phased enrolment of existing beneficiaries from October. Notifications will be sent via SMS and local community centres.
Beneficiaries are encouraged to bring their ID documents and ensure that their contact details are up to date.
