ActionSA KwaZulu-Natal leader Zwakele Mncwango has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of African National Congress (ANC) member and former KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba.
Mahlaba reportedly died after being struck by a vehicle while jogging in his hometown Newcastle over the weekend. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital where he had been taken following the incident.
The 44-year-old politician, who previously served as mayor of Newcastle Local Municipality, was a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature (MPL) at the time of his death.
Condolences have continued to pour in following his passing. ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal extended its sympathies to Mahlaba’s family and loved ones while calling for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“It is important that the Mahlaba family and the people of KwaZulu-Natal receive clear answers and closure as to whether this was simply a tragic accident or whether any other factors may have contributed to his death.”
The calls for a thorough investigation come as South Africa prepares for the upcoming local government elections in November, a period that has historically been associated with heightened political tensions and an increase in politically motivated killings, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal. While there is no evidence at this stage to suggest Mahlaba’s death was politically motivated, Mncwango said a transparent investigation is necessary to establish the facts and provide certainty to his family and the public.
Mncwango said that while political parties may differ on matters of policy and ideology, moments such as these serve as a reminder of their shared humanity.
“Mahlaba was not only a political leader from an opposing party but also a personal friend. His passing is deeply saddening, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those who knew and loved him,” he said.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said Mahlaba’s passing had cast a dark and painful cloud over the province and the broader liberation movement.
Provincial spokesperson Sifiso Sonjica said Mahlaba’s life was a masterclass in organic leadership. Rising through the ranks of student politics, he was a leader who never outsourced his responsibilities.
“The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal extends its deepest, most heartfelt and revolutionary condolences to his beloved family, his wife, their children and the millions of South Africans whose lives he touched as both a healthcare practitioner and a political leader. We weep with you,” Sonjica said.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) described Mahlaba as a soft-spoken leader who would be remembered for consistently extending a helping hand to the marginalised and the poor.
“His contribution to healthcare, local government and the provincial legislature leaves behind a legacy of service that will be remembered by many for years to come,” said EFF KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Mongezi Twala.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating a case of culpable homicide and one person has been arrested.
This is a developing story.
