The Durban University of Technology Football Club’s Varsity Cup campaign has been bolstered by AmaZulu (DStv Diski Challenge, Premiership reserve league) player.

The tournament, which is already under way, commenced on July 25 and will end on September 26. It is being held at various university sports facilities around the country.

After a goalless draw against  the Central University of Technology (CUT) last Thursday at the CUT Stadium, the DUT will hope Sbonelo Ngidi’s PSL reserve league’s experience inspires them to success.

He said: “Judging from the games we played before the Varsity Cup (started), I can say we had soldiers who were willing to fight till the end. Starting with the coaches, technical team, and my teammates, I can say we have a solid structure.”

Last week’s game at CUT Stadium showcased the preparations of both coaches and players. The DUT team looked sharp after turning the corner, having started on a slow footing.

“From what I saw last week, I think THE players (will) have confidence ahead of today’s game. Although the confidence was there last week, this week we must be (more) confident and be willing to fight for the badge,” he added.

Ngidi, 20, is optimistic about DUT’s ambitions. Starting from the Varsity Qualifiers in Cape Town, where the University of Johannesburg was booted out of the cup after suffering from a 1-0 defeat to DUT.

“Since we will be playing in the same atmosphere (weather, crowd, stadium), now we must get used to it and not find excuses, but play (for a win),” he concluded.
