Durban City doesn’t sign Gabuza as expected

Owner of Durban City, Farook Kadodia, has told Credible Source by DUT Journalism that they’ve done an about turn and will not be signing former Orlando Pirates striker, Thamsanqa Gabuza, as previously planned.

He says there is a bit of a worry that Gabuza may not be as great as he used to be. “Right now, I do not think he was at the level that we wanted him, so it is very hard to give a judgment if the guy is not fit,” explained Kadodia.

Maritzburg United relocated to Durban and changed the name after not receiving enough support from Msunduzi Municipality which chose to bring Royal AM from Durban instead while giving them millions of Rand and a free stadium to train and host home matches. That decision faced criticism in a municipality that has been under administration several times and is often criticised for poor service delivery.

37-year-old Gabuza was released by TS Galaxy at the end of the 2023/24 season and has been without a club since. “So right now there is no Gabuza. No, he wasn’t signed.”

Instead, they signed Ruzaigh Gamildien who has also been without a club since leaving Royal AM.

On Friday night, Durban City started their Motsepe Foundation League match against Casric on a backfoot, conceding an early goal from a corner kick.

They managed to get two goals in quick succession in a second half comeback.

After the win, head coach Simo Dladla hinted at another signing. “We will see in the next games what happens but for now I see a balanced team, but we can still see a player with a different profile in the strike position”
