Spinners steal show as DUT cricket team downs KwaMashu

The Durban University of Technology Cricket Club secured a crucial victory over KwaMashu Cricket Club at the Chatsworth 217 cricket ground on Sunday, successfully chasing 65 runs with four overs to spare.

DUT bounced back from last week’s upset with a dominant bowling display in the T20 Castle Promotion League.

KwaMashu captain Wanda Mtolo chose to bat first after winning the toss, but that decision backfired later when DUT bowlers restricted the opponents to a modest 64 runs all out.

DUT spinners exploited the turning pitch conditions well to their advantage. Spinners Bonginkosi Luthuli and Kreesan Pillay were the pick of the bowlers, both taking three wickets apiece.

DUT batsmen stepped up to the plate needing 65 runs to win, clinically chasing the target with 4 overs to spare.

The DUT coach, Darryll Govender, had only praise for the team’s performance saying, “A well-deserved win today. The boys are making great strides and progressing steadily, which is a fantastic sign for the rest of the season to come.”

Captain Katlego Mojakisane commended the dominant bowling performance, “Our bowlers did very well. They set up the win for us by restricting them (the opponents) to a low score and from there, it was our job to chase it and we did.”

He added that he was not concerned about the slow scoring rate in the run chase. “We did not want to take any unnecessary risk in our run chase. We knew the pitch conditions were tricky, we rotated the strike well and capitalised on bad deliveries. We didn’t not wrap it up as fast as we could have, but it was the right strategy for the win.”

With this win DUT regains momentum and sets their sights on next week’s crucial encounter in Chatsworth.
