Thirty from all over South Africa and neighbouring eSwatini exhibited their work and shared knowledge with each other in a satellite exhibition that took place at the Durban University of Technology’s City Campus. Organisers of this event say  that it also serves as a space for training.

The organisers are known and Unlearn To Learn and they partnered with the university this year. “It came to a point where by we felt like this thing should be formal, where by we mentor other artists because it was difficult for them to go to art spaces and for most it is their first time exhibiting in these art spaces, so my role is to make this art community united, “ said founder, Kenneth Shandu.

The artists whose work has been on show say that they appreciate the opportunity to connect with others who do what they do. “We were treated well by the Satellite Gallery, and our work has been exhibited, as an artists you always wish to have your work appreciated,” said visual artist,  Mbali Mabuza.

City Campus is DUT’s creative hub as it houses arts students from disciplines that include Find Art, Graphic Design and Jewellery Design. Art students said they enjoyed being a part of this event. “The event is a far cry from what we see on television, it was chilled and layed back and there was a lot of interaction between people,” said Jewellery Design student, Ayabonga Duma.

Attendees were also asked to participate through collaborative pieces on opening day. The work done by the artists was sponsored by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the National Arts Council The exhibition will close on 13 June 2025.
