Durban’s Albert Park came to life over the weekend as Ward 32 Local Football Association (LFA) hosted its annual LFA tournament.

The area is usually known for vagrants who sometimes sleep there, but is cleaning up well as it’s now used for various events in the city.

Those participating in the football tournament contributed money towards their own winnings and in the end, the victor gets R10 000 with the runner up receiving R6 000. “This year we’ve had to start the tournament late due to the repairs which took place at the park, but we are happy with the turnout of the team,” explained tournament facilitator, Mbongeni Mhlongo.

There was fierce competition with fast paced matches only lasting for 30 minutes per half. “The tournament is a good way for players to test themselves before the season starts,” said Mhlongo.

In the end, Masters FC beat tournament favourites, Durban Hotspurs, in what was a tightly conteste game which was settled by a first half header from Lungelo Dlomo.

“I am happy about my team’s performance. To think that we almost lost in the first game, but now we are champions,” says Msters FC coach Skhumbuzo.
