Social media has been flooded with reactions following the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s decision to appoint party leader Jacob Zuma’s son, Duduzane Zuma, as its first deputy president.

The appointment was announced during a media briefing in Durban on Tuesday as the party unveiled a major leadership reshuffle ahead of South Africa’s local government elections on 4 November.

As part of the changes, former Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe was removed as first deputy president, while former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko was relieved of his position as national chairperson and replaced by Mxolisi Phakathi. Nomsa Dlamini was replaced by Lindiwe Mtshali, Nameh Mogale was appointed as a Member of Parliament, and KwaZulu-Natal party leader Willies Mchunu was elevated to the party’s Presidency Collective.

MK Party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu said Hlophe would remain the party’s parliamentary leader.

“Hlophe will continue to lead the MK Party caucus in the National Assembly consisting of 58 members. President Zuma extends his gratitude to Dr Hlophe for his leadership, dedication and contribution to the growth of the MK Party,” Mahlangu said.

The announcement quickly sparked debate on social media, with supporters praising the appointment while critics accused the party of promoting dynastic politics.

Former Jacob Zuma ally and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member Carl Niehaus criticised the move on X, writing: “I told you so! The MK Party is a scam and a family enterprise. Everything (and even worse) that I predicted has come true, and it continues to unfold.”

Sunday Times journalist Sipho Masondo also questioned the appointment, suggesting it could signal the party’s intentions ahead of the November local government elections.

“We are laughing about MK Party’s musical chairs. But this is no laughing matter. There is a real chance that the MK Party could win eThekwini outright during the local government election in November,” Masondo wrote on X.

He further speculated that Duduzane Zuma’s appointment could be linked to a future mayoral bid in eThekwini, although the MK Party has not indicated that he will be its candidate.

MK Party Member of Parliament Mzwanele Manyi defended the leadership changes, saying criticism from political opponents suggested the party was making the right decisions.

“When your opponents are outraged, it may well mean that their plans have been disrupted,” Manyi wrote on X.

The fact that MK Party decisions anger and attract scorn and ridicule from those outside the MK Party is a sign that the Party is making the right decisions.

Other social media users argued that the appointment could damage the party’s electoral prospects.

“No matter how hard you try to spin this, it’s a blunder and it will negatively affect the MK Party in the upcoming local government elections. There are many young people in the MK Party who could have occupied that position, but Zuma chose to put his son,” one X user posted.

However, others welcomed the move, saying it reflected the party’s efforts to elevate younger leaders.

“First Deputy President Duduzane Zuma’s appointment marks the rise of a younger generation of leadership and sends a message that young people must not only shape the future, they must lead it,” another supporter wrote.

The reshuffle comes at a crucial time for the MK Party as it prepares for the 4 November local government elections. The party emerged as the largest political party in KwaZulu-Natal during the 2024 national and provincial elections, dramatically reshaping the province’s political landscape. The latest leadership changes are expected to fuel further debate over the party’s direction and succession plans under Jacob Zuma’s leadership.
