Siyabonga Nomvethe stresses support for young boys through football tournament

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana striker, Siyabonga Nomvethe, says his new schools football tournament is largely to help in the fight against drug abuse in KwaZulu-Natal. Learners from eleven regions across the province are able to participate.

“I trust that a future Siyabonga Nomvethe will emerge from this tournament,” says the footballer.

Many initiatives focus on young girls like the Take A Girl Child campaign which some say leads to young men being left behind and falling prey to social ills. Linda Mbonambi from eThekwini Municipality says this shouldn’t be and that’s why such a tournament is important.

“When girls are empowered the boy child should not be left behind,” Mbonambi stressed.

SAFA eThekwini region president, Mazwi Mkhize, urges all public schools in KwaZulu-Natal to participate in this competition.

“A child in sports is a child away from prison,” said Mkhize.

The tournament is expected to start in June. Netball has also been included.
