Veteran South African actor Seputla Sebogodi has died at the age of 67, leaving behind a decades-long legacy that helped shape the country’s theatre and television industry.

The Sebogodi family confirmed that the award-winning actor passed away on 15 July following complications related to diabetes.

Born in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, Sebogodi was widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most accomplished actors, with a career spanning more than four decades across theatre, television and film.

He rose to prominence in the 1980s through his portrayal of Nkosheng in the classic television drama Bophelo ke Semphekgo, before taking on memorable roles such as Isaac “Ike” Moloi in Suburban Bliss and Kenneth Mashaba in the popular soap opera Generations. More recently, he appeared in productions including Redemption and Scandal!, introducing his work to a new generation of viewers.

Beyond television, Sebogodi was a respected stage actor whose theatre credits included acclaimed productions such as Big Dada, Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial and Mooi Street Moves, among many others. His performances earned him widespread recognition for his versatility and commitment to the performing arts.

In a statement, his family paid tribute to the veteran actor.

“His legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work and the many lives he touched.”

Sebogodi’s distinguished career earned him two SAFTA awards and four Loerie Awards, while he was also named Best Director for the play Tastes Like Strawberry. Black Moon was his 88th professional stage production, adding to a career that saw him perform internationally in the United States and Europe. His film credits include The Woman King and Place of Lions.

Earlier this month, Sebogodi publicly dismissed rumours that he had fallen on hard times after images of him looking frail and unkempt at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, circulated widely on social media.

He explained that the photographs had been taken while he was in character for the theatre production Black Moon, which was staged at the festival and featured fellow veteran actors Jerry Phele and Sanku Bokaba.

Throughout his career, Sebogodi was an outspoken advocate for improving conditions in South Africa’s creative industry. He repeatedly called for greater regulation of the sector, arguing that many actors faced financial insecurity and lacked adequate support structures.

He also advocated for stronger representation of performers, saying the industry needed organisations that could better protect actors’ rights and livelihoods.

In a 2019 interview with the Sowetan, Sebogodi highlighted the important role the arts had played in South Africa’s history.

“This is an industry that can create a lot of jobs and is an industry that helped black people break the walls of apartheid. People knew about apartheid because of plays,” he said.

Known for his candid and principled views, Sebogodi remained an influential voice in the entertainment industry until his death. His passing marks the loss of one of South Africa’s most respected thespians, whose work on stage and screen inspired generations of actors and audiences alike.
