Spain have been crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic final that was decided in extra time.

The highly anticipated final which also featured a half-time entertainment show was played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States, on Sunday, 19 July, bringing an end to a month-long tournament featuring the newly expanded 48-team format.

Both sides created opportunities throughout the match, but Spain’s trademark possession-based style gradually took control as the contest wore on. Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card and sent off for a challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí, reducing the South Americans to 10 men.

With the numerical advantage, La Roja continued to apply pressure before Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, scoring the only goal of the match to hand Spain their second FIFA World Cup title.

Spain entered the tournament with one of the youngest squads among the 48 competing nations, boasting an average age of 26.19 years and only six players over the age of 30. The youthful squad combined technical quality with tactical discipline throughout the tournament, dominating possession in most of its matches while producing a series of composed performances.

Argentina arrived in the United States as defending champions after lifting the World Cup trophy in Qatar in 2022 and were widely regarded as one of the tournament favourites. The defeat ended their hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the men’s FIFA World Cup title.

The emotional scenes following the final whistle reflected the magnitude of the occasion. Captain Lionel Messi, who had inspired Argentina throughout the tournament, was visibly emotional after the defeat, while several of his teammates were left in tears.

One of the most memorable moments after the match came when Messi embraced Spain’s teenage star, Lamine Yamal. The image quickly spread across social media, with many football fans describing it as a symbolic passing of the torch between one of the greatest players of all time and one of the game’s brightest young talents.

Spain’s triumph caps a remarkable period for the national team, which also won the UEFA European Championship in 2024. La Roja conceded just one goal throughout the tournament and extended their unbeaten run to 38 matches, further cementing their status as one of the dominant forces in international football.
